How I found at-home Yoga

Hi. I’m Judy, 56, married, and a proud mother of two amazing young adults.

I have always enjoyed a wide range of sports so staying fit and active in my youth came naturally to me. I didn’t even have to think about it.

Then all of a sudden I’m 40, the kids need me less, life is easier BUT physically, things are getting harder. Muscles are noticeably weaker, I’m tired much of the time and my knees and back hurt.

I know I need to alter this trajectory I’m on or old age is going to be very difficult. Over the next decade I try anything. Swimming, aerobics, weights, Pilates. I buy exercise equipment I rarely use. I even join a gym more than once.

The problem is, I get bored easily. I jump from one thing to the next hoping to find that one fitness regime that I really enjoy and will continue doing, long into my senior years.

I can’t seem to find it.

Fast forward to 5 years ago and my normally full-of-life mother begins experiencing some serious and unexpected health problems. It gets me thinking again about my own mental and physical well-being and steps I can take to hopefully avoid going down that same path.

I do some research on meditation and yoga, which interests me. I enrol in a few yoga classes and while I enjoy the poses and mindfulness training, I’m not a fan of the group setting. I have this habit of getting distracted and of comparing myself negatively to the other, more flexible yogis. I can see the potential of yoga and what it can do for me holistically, but I’m not loving the public sessions.

So I start looking for online yoga that I can do privately, in my own time, in the comfort of my home and hopefully continue doing on a regular basis. From that point on, my love for a daily, at-home yoga practice was born.

After all that searching I finally found what I was looking for. Little did I know it was available to me all along, 24/7, right under my nose.

In the past, I have only ever stuck at something for a few months. Not this time. I’m proud to say it has been 5 years so far, and I still look forward to getting on the mat every day.

I hope that my story, experiences and practical tips will help inspire others to begin and maintain their own home yoga practice. It has definitely changed my life for the better.
